Cynthia Laflin is a kindergarten teacher in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District and has been virtually teaching kindergarteners so far for the entire 2020-2021 school year due to the school district keeping schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Teaching kindergarteners is a hard job in the first place because most have never been in some type of school before and the teacher has to teach them how to read, write, count, and help develop their fine motor skills.

Like with many teachers and schools that have had to switch to virtual learning, Cynthia Laflin has seen the difficulties it brings to students like not taking the classes seriously, falling behind in reading and math, or not having the correct supplies or technology at home to be successful in a virtual learning setting. Although one subject Cynthia Laflin has to teach that is very difficult to do virtually is art.

In kindergarten classes art plays a big part in learning. It helps students learn colors, shapes, and helps develop their fine motor skills. With art being such an important part in the teaching, learning, and development of kindergarten students, Cynthia Laflin was determined to be able to continue those lessons in a virtual learning setting.

With many students not having access or being able to get the art supplies that would be available in the classroom, Cynthia Laflin adjusted her lessons to make it so that all the students in her class would be able to participate in the art lessons and projects. This has required Cynthia Laflin to develop new projects that are virtual learning friendly, and even required her to learn more art and develop her art skills to be able to teach her students these new projects and lessons.

Virtual learning has changed the way many students learn and has affected the learning of subjects beyond those of math and reading. Virtual learning has required all teachers of any grade level and any subject to have to adjust how they teach and how their students learn.
