When it comes to putting out a small fire you do not need to have a fire extinguisher or cause water damage to your couch or hardwood floors. All you need to put out a small fire in your house is some Arm and Hammer baking soda.

It is understandable that people may not think that something as simple as Arm and Hammer Baking Soda can put out a fire as well as water or a fire extinguisher, because baking soda is most commonly used for cooking or cleaning. Well one of the main ingredients in dry fire extinguishers is sodium bicarbonate which happens to be the scientific name for the chemical makeup that creates baking soda. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is used in dry fire extinguishers because the chemical make up absorbs heat and releases chemicals that interrupt the flame mechanisms. When using just straight Arm and Hammer Baking Soda mixed with a little vinegar, you are to an extent doing the

same thing that a fire extinguished does just without the mess a fire extinguisher may cause.

Melanie Carmichael who has used Arm and Hammer Baking Soda to put out fires said, “I have used it to put out little fires like small candles and also used it once to put out a fire that happened on an apron of mine. It got it out and didn’t get my kitchen wet like a hose would or have foam everywhere like a fire extinguisher. I would probably still use a hose and fire extinguisher for a bigger fire but for little ones it works great.”

Just like Carmichael said it works best for small fires and that is the truth. If you have a large fire please use a real fire extinguisher if you have one available or hose and call your local fire department. The Arm and Hammer Baking Soda fire extinguisher was created with the idea of putting out small fires and not replacing the local fire department.

Now you know that next time you are in a situation where you have a small fire that will not blow out, you can create your own fire extinguisher by grabbing a box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda from your pantry or fridge and you can get that small fire out before it becomes too big.
